Lagos stands still for Tinubu

Those sitting in traffic right now in Surulere, Western Avenue and Ikorodu road have the former governor of Lagos state, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s birthday to thank for that. You see, Asiwaju is celebrating his 60th and Lagosians must suffer for it. On the best of days, Lagos traffic is one of the worst, and one would expect the former governor – and those planning his birthday – to understand this.

This is clearly too much to ask, however. It would be interesting to find out how many hours of productivity have been wasted today, how many appointments missed, and so on. None of that matters to anyone in these parts though. Nigeria’s big men – and their foot soldiers – confer on themselves a larger- than-life status.

Daily, we witness the abuse of power and privilege by those who have it. Today is just the latest demonstration. I am sure many Lagosians will not begrudge their former governor a happy birthday, but that celebration should not disrupt their lives.

Too late.
